What is a Trade License?
A Trade License is an official certificate issued by the local municipal authority — a Municipal Corporation, Municipality, or Gram Panchayat — under the relevant State Municipal Act, granting permission to conduct a specified business activity from a designated premises within its jurisdiction. Its purpose is to regulate commercial activity and ensure that a business does not create health hazards, public nuisances, or safety concerns for the surrounding locality. Licenses are typically issued by category, covering industries and manufacturing units, shops and commercial establishments, and food establishments.
A Trade License does not confer any ownership rights over the business premises and remains valid only for the specific trade or activity for which it is issued. It is one of the first approvals a business should secure — banks, GST registration, and other statutory licenses frequently require a valid Trade License as evidence that the establishment is lawfully authorized to operate. The license must be renewed annually with the issuing authority.

How to Obtain a Trade License
A Trade License is granted by the local Municipal Corporation or Municipality having jurisdiction over the business premises. Most large civic bodies now accept applications through their online municipal portals.

2Step 2: Complete the Application Form
Fill the Trade License application, online or offline, with your business details, nature of trade, and premises particulars.
3Step 3: Submit Supporting Documents
Attach identity proof, proof of premises, the rental agreement or ownership deed, the owner NOC, and required photographs.
4Step 4: Pay the Prescribed Fee
Pay the applicable annual fee, which varies by city, category of trade, number of employees, and the area of the premises.
5Step 5: Premises Inspection (if required)
A municipal inspector may visit the premises to verify the nature of the trade and its compliance with health, safety, and zoning norms.
6Step 6: Issue of Trade License Certificate
On approval, the municipal authority issues the Trade License, which must be displayed prominently at the business premises.
New applications typically take 7–15 working days, subject to inspection and the completeness of your documentation. Renewals are usually processed faster, often within 3–7 working days.

Post-Registration Compliance
