What is an FSSAI License?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the statutory body that regulates and supervises food safety across the country. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every Food Business Operator (FBO) engaged in the manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, transportation, or sale of food must hold a valid FSSAI registration or licence. Beyond being a legal requirement, it demonstrates a business’s commitment to hygiene and quality — building consumer trust and confidence at every stage of the supply chain.
The type of authorisation depends on the nature and scale of operations. Petty FBOs with an annual turnover below ₹12 lakh require Basic Registration; mid-sized businesses with turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore need a State Licence; and large operators exceeding ₹20 crore — along with importers, exporters, and nationwide distributors — must obtain a Central Licence. Applications are filed online through the FoSCoS portal, and the resulting 14-digit FSSAI number, valid for one to five years, must be displayed on premises and printed on all food product labels.

How to Get an FSSAI License
All FSSAI applications are filed online through the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal at foscos.fssai.gov.in. The category of registration or licence you need is determined by your annual turnover and the scale of your food business operations.
1Step 1: Determine the License Type
Identify whether you require Basic Registration, a State Licence, or a Central Licence based on your turnover and the nature of your food business.
2Step 2: Register on the FoSCoS Portal
Create an account on foscos.fssai.gov.in and complete the applicable application — Form A for Basic Registration or Form B for a State or Central Licence.
3Step 3: Complete the Application & Upload Documents
Submit business and premises details and upload identity proof, address proof, the FSMS plan, and the list of food products to be handled.
4Step 4: Premises Inspection (if applicable)
For State and Central Licences, a Food Safety Officer may inspect your premises to verify hygiene, equipment, and compliance before approval.
5Step 5: FSSAI Certificate Issued
On approval, download your FSSAI Registration or Licence certificate bearing the unique 14-digit FSSAI number.
Basic Registration is typically granted in 7–14 days. State Licences take around 20–30 days, and Central Licences 30–60 days, subject to premises inspection and document verification.
